Our language arts block will focus on listening, speaking, reading, writing and grammar. In the first few weeks, we will be reading from Wonders and Scholastic News. All year we will read from Wonders, Scholastic News, National Geographic and other anthologies. We will also read class novels. We will start the year with Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, then Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great, followed by Fudge-A-Mania. I also close each day by reading aloud to my students. I will begin the year with The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. Our reading objectives include identifying main idea/theme, context clues, inference and point of view. We also focus on fluency and accuracy. Students have a daily independent reading block. They are encouraged to bring a book from home. Our library day will be every Monday. In third grade, we hope students will make reading a daily habit, and read at least 30 minutes at home every day.
