My name is Suzy Merrill and this is my 16th year teaching third grade at Oakridge Elementary. Prior to Oakridge, I taught third grade in the Jordan School District. I graduated from the University of Utah with the degree Master of Arts in Teaching, Elementary Education - MAT. I did my undergraduate work in journalism and political science at California State University, Chico, where I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Information and Communication Studies. I have a Gifted and Talented Endorsement, an ESL Endorsement and I have completed the two-year LETRS literacy program. Teaching and learning is my passion. My classroom is rich with books, information, conversation, exploration, discovery and the exchange of ideas. I never lose sight of the children as individuals with perspectives, and points of view. I allow their interests to help determine our classroom experiences. I endeavor to create a nurturing, positive and safe classroom community where students are encouraged to collaborate in their work, and care for others. In my classroom, we emphasize kindness, consideration and respect. I am dedicated to a classroom where students feel safe to ask questions, seek knowledge, and become active learners. I am committed to the progress and growth of each one of my students. When not at school, my husband and I enjoy dog sports. I compete in dog agility with my lab/collie, Ani, and my sheepadoodle, Finn. When our furry family isn't occupying our attention, we enjoy hiking, bird watching and the outdoors.
